~Enjoying a little "after surgery" treat!~
Wow, it's been awhile since I have posted. So many things have happened. We took permanant custody of Ray's 9 yr old son. His mom was no longer able to care for him, so now he's here! We are all trying to readjust and that has been trying. He's doing well, but we still have a ways to go. Ray is on the last leg of his tour, but before he finishes, he will be home on emergency leave to be with Connor for his surgery June 17th. In fact, he is enroute right now. This last week has been emotionally hard for me. Connor was out in the sun a little too long last week, and ended up with a really bad 2nd degree burn on his back. He ended up with a huge blister (like 4 inches long) then it popped and the pain ensued. After 2 trips to the pediatrician, I was told to rub all of the dead skin off so that bacteria would not settle in the wound. So my friend came over and "helped" me. It was the most horrible thing I could have ever done to my child. I was rubbing his raw skin and nerves and he was screaming uncontrollably. We decided that enough was enough and I called an ambulance to take us to Dell Children's Hospital. He was jumping, throwing himself around and squeezing the daylights out of me in pain and there was no way he was going to sit in his seat and buckle all the way to the hospital. About 15 minutes into the ambulance ride, he calmed down and was ok. We got to the ER and were seen by 3 different doctors. It was decided by the Trauma Dr that he should have a Biobrane put on his back. It's a piece of membrane that acts as a thick layer of skin and helps promote the skin to grow. It required him to be put under anesthesia with 2 anaesthesiologists while the 2 Dr's scrubbed all of the dead skin off of his back. Sounds so painful, but he was such a trooper! He came out with virtually no pain. That's the beauty of the Biobrane, it literally takes all the pain away. Such a miracle. We go back everyday to the hospital to have his dressings changed and he doesn't mind at all. The Biobrane will eventually start peeling off as the new skin grows. When that happens, they will trim it off and eventually we will just be putting Eucerin lotion on until it heals completely. For what could have been a complete and total disaster turned into a blessing in disguise.
As I type this, my sweet hubby is in the air on a 14 hr flight from Kuwait to DC. He will arrive in Austin tomorrow afternoon. I haven't told the kids that he is coming, so it should be a fun surprise. He is going to be exhausted and so tired, but I am so glad he will be by my side when Connor has his surgery. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures. I will post more from now on. Promise!
